Union Pacific releases information on accident that killed worker in Texas

Some details have been released regarding a worker who was killed on a bridge construction site in Castroville, Texas.
The accident occurred on Sept. 22 and involved a Union Pacific contractor employee that was performing bridge work.
According to Union Pacific, a worker for W.T. Byler was operating a roadway maintenance machine with three spans of steel grating and was moving it westward from the open deck bridge to a material staging area. The steel grating was 20 ft long by 3 ft wide and weighed about 2,200 lb. The foreman made several attempts to contact the worker by radio, and eventually walked to the location where the work was taking place and found the worker unresponsive and still seated in the machine. Nobody else was near the track when the accident happened, and no other employees witnessed the accident.
The NTSB is still conducting an investigation, and while on the scene it conducted track inspections, analyzed and measured the steel grating material, and conducted interviews.
