La Porte, Ind., is moving closer to eliminating an at-grade railroad crossing.

Engineering and preliminary work on the two-lane Tipton Street railroad overpass continues, and once that is complete property acquisition will take place. Bids are set to go out in April of 2023.

The overpass will carry traffic over Norfolk Southern tracks from the north side of State Street to the south side of Furnace Street. The bridge will be 130 ft long and will have hundreds of feet of approaches on both sides of the structure.

A $6.5 million Indiana state grant will help pay for the project. La Porte will add $1 million.

La Porte has a total of seven crossings along the rail line, and that number will be reduced to four.

City Engineer Nick Minich said the overpass would not be as high as most overpasses so as not to disturb local residents.
